(Circa 2012)

There was a short time in my career, four and a half months to be exact, that I ventured out to work on a cruise ship as an Entertainment Manager. Disney Cruise Line was something that always piqued my interest, from its Broadway style shows, to its interactive and unique entertainment offerings, to the expansive travel opportunities. I wanted to use the skills I developed working in the entertainment industry and take on the challenges of a constantly moving vessel.

Although many leading professionals in the industry enjoy the ship life, it was something that wasn’t quite right for me. I valued my time at Disney Cruise Line working with the ship-wide entertainment team; I learned a lot and met some amazing individuals that are still great friends today. I missed the personal contact with my family and friends on land and the work life balance that ship life doesn’t afford. You have to be in the right mindset for the day-to-day ship life. Not being able to go “home” at the end of the day is very different way of living. Many folks enjoy the cruise line way of life.

While I wouldn’t mind supporting shorter stays on a cruise ship, long term contracts didn’t fit my lifestyle. The industry is strong and continues to push the boundaries of entertainment on the water. It is truly wonderful to see what they offer and the amazing talent that goes into those offerings.

"In the end we only regret the chances we didn't take."
